Why it matters
The DIVA Charitable Trust is committed to elevating, celebrating and supporting LGBTQIA+ women and non-binary people everywhere. Our goal is to be a stage for talent, a mirror that reflects our community in all its diversity, and a megaphone, amplifying our movement in its work to create a fairer, more just world for all LGBTQIA+ people. Through this work, we believe we can contribute to shaping a world that is better for everyone.
LGBTQIA+ women and non-binary people are still underrepresented in leadership, media and research. Many face discrimination, a lack of visibility and other barriers to belonging.
With over 10% of young women (16-24) now identifying as LGB (up from 4.8% in 2017), visibility has never been more critical.* Despite this growing population, LGBTQIA+ women remain underrepresented in media, research and corporate leadership. That’s why our work at DIVA Charitable Trust is so important.
Much research exists highlighting the challenges faced by the LGBTQIA+ community** and there is plentiful evidence showing that there is still a long way to go before gender equality is achieved.*** Many women face further intersectional discrimination based on their identities and lived experience.
Visibility is the foundation of change. It helps break down bias, drive equality and create cultures where everyone can thrive. At a time when LGBTQIA+ women and non-binary people feel the world is an increasingly hostile and uncertain place, where librarians are being asked to remove books with LGBTQIA+ themes from public collections, and abuse is commonplace both online and in person, it is more important than ever that the community and our allies come together to celebrate and elevate our voices.
